September 27, 2017 by the order of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Concept of celebration of the 20th anniversary of the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Astana city "EL JURAGI - ASTANA" was approved.

According to this document, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the capital will consist of three stages: preparatory - until December 10, 2017, the main one - from December 10, 2017 to July 6, 2018 and post-holiday - from July 6, 2018 to December 31, 2018. At the same time, considering that 2018 is a jubilee year, the planned events will be held throughout the calendar year.

In implementation of the Concept, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with the akims of the cities of Astana and Almaty, the regions will develop and approve the Action Plan for the preparation and holding of the 20th anniversary of the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan - the city of Astana. Actually, the Concept itself provides for a large range of organizational, information, image, improvement and other events throughout Kazakhstan.

In particular, it is planned to hold thematic round tables, scientific conferences, symposiums and seminars, republican and international events that reveal the role of Astana in the global world, cultural events, including concerts, festivals, exhibitions, meetings with the participation of Kazakhstan and world stars in the field of culture and arts, sports competitions and recreational activities for different age groups of the country's inhabitants. Youth flashmobs, events in the open-air format, thematic exhibitions in libraries and museums and much more will be supported.

Among other things, it is planned to hold a republican presentation of sacred places of Astana, a complex of image events in all regions of the country on topics of the results and prospects of holding EXPO-2017 in Astana and solemn receptions for the jubilee of the capital in all overseas institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Also, works will be carried out to improve Astana and create the necessary infrastructure, improve and update the infrastructure of settlements, the opening of new parks and avenues in all regions of the country.

The squares and streets of Astana and other settlements of the country will be decorated with festive outdoor decoration. In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 20, 1997 №3700, since December 10, 1997 the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan was declared the city of Akmola - the present city of Astana. The official presentation of the new capital of Kazakhstan was held on June 10, 1998. The capital's day - July 6 - is a state holiday of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2018, 20 years have passed since the city of Astana became the capital.

Over the past 20 years, the city's population has increased more than 3.5 times and is more than 1 million people. At the same time during this period the territory of the capital expanded from 258 square meters. km up to 800 square meters. km. The construction of Astana is inseparable from the history of the emergence of independent Kazakhstan and the activities of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, who first proposed and implemented the idea of ​​building a new capital.

The constant attention and concern of the President of the country about the development of Astana ensured her transformation into a dynamically developing metropolis, a modern and competitive city of Eurasia. At the moment Astana is an established administrative, socio-economic and political center of Kazakhstan. The capital of Kazakhstan embodies the socio-economic and political successes of our state during the years of independence, demonstrates the growing power of the country and the high potential for its further development.

Today the capital is the flagship of all positive initiatives and transformations in Kazakhstan. Astana gives impetus to development, it is the center of attraction for all regions of the republic.
